Julius Nyerere was a Tanzanian anti-colonial activist, politician, and political theorist. He was educated at Makerere College in Kampala, Uganda, and Edinburgh University. He was the first Tanganyikan to study at a British university and graduated from Edinburgh with an MA in history and economics in 1952. He returned to Tanganyika to teach 1952-55. He became president of the Tanganyika African Association in 1953, in which year was nominated as a member of the Tanganyikan Legislative Council. He was chief minister when Tanganyika gained self-governance in September 1960 until independence in December 1961. When Tanganyika became a republic in 1962, he was elected President, and in 1964 he became President of the United Republic of Tanzania (Tanganyika and Zanzibar). Nyerere was reelected president of Tanzania in 1965 and served three more five-year terms before his resignation in 1985.
