Scope and Content

Letters, papers and other records, including original placards and notices, respecting the Peterloo Massacre of 1819, assembled by the Rev. William Robert Hay, Chair of Salford Hundred Quarter Sessions and the leading figure on the magistrates' side in the Peterloo Controversy.

Custodial History

Former owners: the family of the late Mr T.E. Smith of Rochdale, Lancashire, from whom they were acquired by Dr Wadsworth.

The JRUL holds two bundles of printed papers relating to the Peterloo Massacre within the Grey (Stamford) Papers from Dunham Massey (ref.: GB 133 EGR/4/2/3/2-3 ). The Library also holds an account book of the Peterloo Relief Fund (ref.: GB 133 Eng MS 172).
