Jim Batstone (1871-1956) was born in England. He subsequently moved to Cardiff and lived at Canton and Grangetown and was employed at Cardiff Docks as a ship's painter. He had a keen interest in sport and played bowls for Wales during the 1920s. He also played rugby for Cardiff Rugby Club, served on its committee and became a vice-president of Cardiff Athletic Club. Jim Batstone's son William, was born 1891 in Cardiff and like his father became a ship's painter and later a grocer and publican. William Batstone's son Harold, married Ivy Turner in 1938 and the couple lived at 40 Canada Road, Cardiff
