Scope and Content

Extensive correspondence to and from Britten concerning his support of a person, organization or activity by giving money, encouragement or other help.

The files include manuscript and typescript letters to Britten.

The letters from Britten include some manuscript letters in Britten's hand as well as photocopies of Britten manuscript letters. Letters from Britten are mostly typescript copy letters from Britten, his secretary or assistant. From the late 1940s onwards, Britten's secretary or assistant replied to many letters.

For many of the organisations there is also a file of correspondence in the series of Britten general correspondence files ref no. BBA. It is not clear why Britten and his secretary kept 2 files of correspondence for many of these organisations. Where there is another file of correspondence under ref no. BBA this is indicated in the Related Material field.

Arrangement

The files are arranged alphabetically by name of correspondent; either surname of a person or title of an organisation, company or other body. The file contain both letters to and letters from Britten.
