Scope and Content

Shifford is a village in the south-west of Oxfordshire. Originally it was a chapelry in the large parish of Bampton, but when Bampton was split up in 1845, it was joined with Bampton Aston (which

had a new church of its own) to form a new parish. The hamlets of Cote and Chimney were also included in it. In 1976, Bampton Aston and Shifford were united with the rest of Bampton, and

Clanfield, to form a new parish. More on the history of Bampton may be found at PAR16, where there will be other pre-1845 records on it.

Some of the following records were originally deposited with the Bodleian Library in 1972. The latest baptism, marriage and burial registers were deposited in 1999 (accession 4575). However, since Shifford was amalgamated with the larger village of Bampton Aston, many records in PAR17 (Bampton Aston), including Vestry Minutes, P.C.C. Minutes and Registers of Service concern Shifford too.

Recatalogued by Robin Darwall-Smith in May 1996, later additions by Mark Priddey in October 1999.
