Administrative / Biographical History

David Salomons was born in 1797 and died in 1873. He was a financier by profession and an original director of the London and Westminster Bank. He also contributed greatly to public affairs. In 1839 he became Sheriff of Kent and in 1855 became the first Jewish Lord Mayor of London. In this role he was a major protagonist in the battle to secure political rights for Jews and other religious minorities. He purchased Broomhill in 1829 and was made a Baronet in 1869.
