Turnpike Cottage was nextdoor to the first National School at Dwygyfylchi, at the junction of Treforris Road and Conway Old Road. Part of the building is now an electricity sub-station. They were believed to be the last to collect tolls at the Turnpike, which was a chain across Treforris Road. The toll was charged to those who sought to avoid paying a toll at Conway 'Sychnant gate' by going along the sands around Penmaenbach and joing the toll road [now Conway Old Road] at Trwyn yr Wylfa.
