On left hand columns receipts at Emporium day by day; on right hand columns, sundry payments. Up to end of 1847, the total daily receipts are very carefully entered; from 1848 on he is content with the weekly totals only. About October 1849, these cease; many blank pages follow ending up with "Sale at the Emporium," (March-April, 1854), pp. 234-235.
John Matthews managed to insert casually in the left hand columns several entries of domestic and general interest - "a day never to be forgotten" opposite 15 June, 1844 (death of his wife?); death of his father, 9 January 1848; of his aunt, 19 March, 1848. "Election polling day," 10 February 1849, followed four days later by the chairing of the successful candidate, Mr Pryse of Gogerddan, who beat Mr J.S. Harford by 8 votes. The right columns also contain interesting items, such as payments for Traethodydd and Beirniadur (spelt Beirniadyr and Beirniadydd); £5 to the Trefecca College fund, 27 May, 1845; Hyfforddwr and Rhodd Mam for Skinner Street (a branch cause of Tabernacl) and a Sillebydd Cymreig for his son John, 27 January, 1844 (then six years of age); 8/7 for church rates; 2/- for "widow of man drowned" (p.135), &c.
