Parish records of Micklefield

Includes register of christenings, 1861-1947; register of marriages, 1886-1975; register of burials, 1877-1918; register of banns, 1886-1970; register of services, 1886-1894, 1900-1921, 1926-1978; register of graves, 1861-1913; records concerning benefice income, including tithe paper, 1921; records of incumbent, including copy instrument of right of nomination to chapel, 1885, and a photocopy of an article on Ernest Farrar who was brought up at Micklefield vicarage, 1984.

Micklefield was a chapelry within the parish of Sherburn in Elmet until 1886, when it separated from Sherburn to form its own parish. The old chapel of ease, which dated to at least 1528, had been replaced with a new church in 1861, built at the expense of Thomas Davison Bland of Kippax Park.
Today St Mary’s is part of the benefice of Aberford with Micklefield, within the Sherburn in Elmet group of churches.

This arrangement was designed to reflect the principal activities of the parish and its associated organisations, and to aid researchers in identifying the records these activities generate. This arrangement was introduced in 2020. Records are arranged within the following alphabetical series but retain their original archival reference at file/item level:

Records are open to the public, subject to the overriding provisions of relevant legislation, including data protection laws. 24 hours' notice is required to access photographic material.

The archive was deposited at the Borthwick Institute in 1978 by the incumbent. Further additions were made to the archive in 1981, 1984, 1985 and 1987.
