Administrative / Biographical History

The Lyric theatre Trust took over the lease of the Lyric theatre in 1987 after it had lain empty for 6 years and the council planned to turn it into a shopping centre. Over a period of ten years, they refurbished the theatre and it thrived, operating as both a theatre and cinema. Instrumental in this change was, founder of the Carmarthen Youth Opera, Elizabeth Evans, and the theatre has enjoyed a strong association with the society ever since. The Trust was incorporated as a limited company on the 4th November 1988, citing its objective as to “promote, maintain, improve and advance education particularly by the encouragement of the arts”.

In 1999, when the minutes held at Carmarthen Archives commence, ownership of the building reverted to the Carmarthen Council after a local government re-organisation, but the Trust continued to run the theatre. In 2002, the Trust was growing disillusioned. The Local Authority was campaigning to build a multi-screen cinema, which would effectively remove the Lyric’s chief income while the Council were unaccommodating in terms of funding. As time went on, the Trust began to feel that aa take-over by the Council was inevitable, and prepared themselves to handover their theatre.

The final factor in the cessation of the Trust was when Elizabeth Evans, still the driving force behind the theatre, began to suffer ill health and handed in her notice, planning to leave in September 2004. At the end of September 2004, management was handed over to the Council and the Trust effectively stopped trading as a company, donating their residual funds to the Carmarthen Youth Opera and to the Elizabeth Evans Memorial Trust. The Lyric Trust (Carmarthen) Ltd was finally struck from the companies register on the 26th August 2008.
