Administrative / Biographical History

Action Opportunities (1976-1985) was established by the Inter-Organisational Committee on Sex Discrimination in 1976 to promote the use and understanding of the Equal Opportunities Act, Equal Pay Act and the Sex Discrimination Act. It was given a grant towards its work by both the European Commission and the Equal Opportunities Commission. It published four pamphlets: 'A Guide to the Industrial Tribunal Procedure', 'If I Can Manage So Can You', 'Simple Steps to Public Life' and 'Simple Steps for Returners'. Its steering committee was: Baroness Seear (Chair), Mrs SJ Shuttleworth (Vice Chair), Gillian Mackay (Treasurer) and Mrs Gimpel (Secretary). Mary Stott and Pamela Anderson were also members. It was always intended that Action Opportunities would have a limited life and the group was wound up in May 1985.
