John Anderson Gilmour

John Anderson Gilmour, 1904-1992, was the nephew of Mary and Margaret Gilmour who were two of the "Glasgow Girls". They ran a succesful art studio in Glasgow teaching women various arts and crafts. He worked for several textile firms in Glasgow and Manchester before setting up his own firm John Gilmour & Co Ltd at Troqueer Mills in Dumfries in 1949, producing Jacquard and Dobby woven furnishing fabrics. Several other businesess shared the Mills, namely Nith Dyeing and Finishing Company and Charteris and Charlesworth weavers. He was bought out by his co-directors in 1957 who subsequently sold the mill to Courtaulds and it eventually closed. He subsequently worked for Whitworth & Mitchell and Bartons in Manchester, and the National Society for Cancer Relief in London. He retired in 1974 aged 70.
