A letter addressed to the "Sir President of the Glasgow University Chess Club" from Boris Stepanow, Polytechinal student of Belgrade University, Serbia, asking for financial help to enable Russian refugee students in Belgrade buy some chessmen and boards to set up a chess club. He made the point that the Russian refugees had hardly enough to live on and that they were in great need of cultivated distractions, such as chess, which did not require any expense in the future.
