Scope and Content

Banbury RDC was created under the Local Government Act 1894 and superseded that part of the Banbury Rural Sanitary Authority which was in Oxfordshire (Banbury RSA also included areas in Northamptonshire which became part of Middleton Cheney Rural District and Warwickshire which became part of Farnborough Rural District).

Under the Local Government Act 1972, Banbury RDC was abolished in 1974 and the area absorbed into the new Cherwell District.

In common with other rural and urban district councils, amongst its many responsibilities Banbury RDC was responsible for public health, housing, rating, planning, building regulations, water supplies, sewerage, some roads, and (during World War Two) evacuation.

The collection was originally catalogued as Banbury RDC (accession numbers: 1220, 1326, 1341, 1504, 1545, 1616, 1620, 1622, 2455).

Re-catalogued by Chris Gilliam and Richard Bullard with additional records from accession numbers 2207, 3484, 3511, 3723, 4118, 5386.

Date completed: January 2008
