Scope and Content

The group was formed in 1972 and held its first meeting on the 13 September of that year. They mounted a campaign of objection to the Secretary Of State for Wales' preferred route for the A55 Expressway and the promotion of an alternative route. It failed to achieve its objectives. Following the Secretary Of State's final decision concerning the route, it had been suggested that a further possible role for the group would be to act as an advisor to people affected by the Expressway. However, it was generally felt that members were not qualified to assume such a role, and also no longer had the necessary support. The group was recovened in 1985 following the closure of Pen-Y-Clip tunnel for a week following a rockfall. The possibility of an emergency alternative route instead of the 40 mile detour was investigated but was unsuccessful. The group was convened once more on 3 November 1989 whereupon it was decided that their affairs should be wound-up.
