University of Manchester, School of Informatics Archive

Records of the University of Manchester, School of Informatics which existed from 2004 to 2007. The records are predominantly the minutes of the main School committees viz.: School Board, Policy and Resources, Undergraduate Board, Postgraduate Board, Research, Marketing and Recruitment, Executive Committee of Professors and the Student Committee. Also present are most of the programme handbooks issued by the School for its undergraduate and postgraduate taught courses in this period. Several school committee appear to have held their last meeting in 2006, with no records present for 2007.

The School of Informatics was created on the establishment of The University of Manchester in 2004. It was part of the Faculty of Humanities, and was created from the former UMIST department of computation. It taught bachelor's and masters degrees in a variety of IT related subjects including B.Sc degrees in interactive systems design, information systems engineering, software engineering, computing for business and internet computing, and M.Sc degrees in informatics, software engineering, information systems engineering, business information technology and text mining.

In 2005, the School was externally reviewed and changes were recommended to its running. The School was formally dissolved on 31 July 2007, and its staff were transferred to the School of Computer Science and Manchester Business School.

Due to the recent nature of these records, access restrictions will apply, and a review of the records will be required before access is considered for any research purposes. This will mean that immediate access even to 'open' records will not be possible until the review is complete.

The collection includes material which is subject to the Data Protection Act 1998. Under Section 33 of the Data Protection Act 1998 (DPA), The University of Manchester Library (UML) holds the right to process personal data for research purposes. The Data Protection (Processing of Sensitive Personal Data) Order 2000 enables the UML to process sensitive personal data for research purposes. In accordance with the DPA, UML has made every attempt to ensure that all personal and sensitive personal data has been processed fairly, lawfully and accurately. Users of the archive are expected to comply with the Data Protection Act 1998, and will be required to sign a form acknowledging that they will abide by the requirements of the Act in any further processing of the material by themselves.

Open parts of this collection, and the catalogue descriptions, may contain personal data about living individuals. Some items in this collection may be closed to public inspection in line with the requirements of the DPA. Restrictions/closures of specific items will be indicated in the catalogue.

Transferred to the University Archives on 6 August 2007 on the closure of this School.
