Administrative / Biographical History

James Mearns, hymnologist, was born in 1855 in Coldstream, Scottish Borders, Scotland. He was educated at the University of Glasgow, Scotland, and the United Presbyterian College in Edinburgh, Scotland. He was ordained in the Church of England, and subsequently became vicar at Ashby de la Launde, Lincolnshire, England, and at Rushden, Hertfordshire, England. Later he became the rector at Wallington, Hertfordshire. He died in 1922.

Custodial History

The collection came to the United Free Church College (subsequently Trinity College), Glasgow in 1923, along with Mearns's collection of circa 2,000 printed books on hymnology, and was transferred with the rest of the College Library to the University of Glasgow in 1974.
