Administrative / Biographical History

The Clydebank Cricket Club was founded in 1947 by a number of workers from the John Brown Engineering firm, led by their shop steward David King. The Club began operating out of the Mount Blow recreational ground, and throughout the 1950's and early 1960's its membership grew from a small group of local enthusiasts, to include a number of English players on temporary contracts within the J.B.E company and several members of the Singer Crinket team, which had disbanded in the late 1950's.
By the mid/late 1950's the Clydebank Cricket Club had become a member of the Glasgow and District Cricket league and began playing league cricket in division 3. Here the club won the Rowan Trophy on two occasions and enjoyed success within numerous cup competitions. By the early 1960's the club enjoyed such a high level of membership that a second team was created, which played a full list of fixtures throughout the season, and also a minors and juniors eleven, to facilitate its new younger members. The clubs excellent relationship with various local schools, especially Clydebank High School, proved vital to its survival during the 1970's when its membership began to significantly drop. Support from local schools brought an influx of new players which were enough to bring the club a degree of stability for a further few years.
The Clydebank Cricket Club eventually received promotion to the 2nd division of the Glasgow and District Cricket League, which called for a vast improvement in the quality of the cricket the club played. This promotion unfortunately however coincided with the loss of a number of the clubs top players, and by the following season they had been relegated. From this point onwards the club had great difficulty maintaining player numbers and by the end of its 1987 season the decision was made to resign membership of the Glasgow District League, and in September 1987 the Clydebank Cricket Club was officially disbanded after 40 years.
