Papers of Flora A.R. Murray

Small collection of papers relating to Miss Flora Murray's activities whilst a student at University College Hull (1931-1934). This includes material relating to the University College Hull Debating Society and some material relating to disarmament reflecting her role as Secretary of the League of Nations Branch at University College Hull.

Miss Murray was a student at University College Hull, 1931-1934, Secretary of the Debating Society, and Secretary of the League of Nations Branch at University College Hull. The Hull University College League of Nations branch supported the Youth Disarmament Crusade and Miss Murray spoke at numerous public meetings (see U DX236/6).

After graduating in 1935 she went to work in Lincoln as assistant to Major North Coates who was the Director of Lindsey Rural Community Council. She became Director after the death of Major North Coates and remained in post until her retirement in 1974

She was active in The Society for Lincolnshire History and Archaeology becoming Chair in 1990 at the age of 77 and was made an honorary life member and Vice-President of the Society. She was also a keen supporter of the Lincoln Civic Trust and Lincolnshire Historic Buildings Committee. She was awarded the OBE in 1972 and received an Honorary Degree from the University of Hull in 1990. She died on 1 May 2009 at the age of 96.
