Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
The Welsh Secondary Schools Association is concerned with all aspects of the improvement of the education service in Wales and of secondary schools in particular. It was registered as a charity in 1972. It believes in co-operation and inclusivity, in education for life, and in equality of opportunity, and it provides a forum for debate, professional development and co-operative activity, holding conferences on educational matters, consulting and co-operating with politicians and educational bodies in Wales, and providing school support and training for teachers through the Welsh Schools Partnership. The WSSA is ruled by a Council of representatives from across Wales, and headteachers and deputy and assistant headteachers of all the secondary schools of Wales are members of the Association. Dr John Herbert, of Lliswerry High School, Newport, Monmouthshire, was a member of both the Welsh Secondary Schools Association and the Secondary Heads Association, a UK-wide body for senior staff formed in 1978 (previously the Headmasters' Association and the Association of Headmistresses).
