Scope and Content

Declarations of oaths, mayors of Cowbridge, 1894-1926.

Administrative / Biographical History

The medieval borough of Cowbridge, covering the same area as Cowbridge parish, began to neglect its formal responsibilties from c 1866. On 28th September 1886, a charter of incorporation was obtained under the terms of the Municipal Corporations Act, and a new Borough Council established. In 1894, Cowbridge Rural District Council took on responsibility for sanitation, roads and rating. The Borough continued until 1974, when, under local government reorganisation, its powers were transferred to the Vale of Glamorgan Borough Council.
