Scope and Content

The collection contains material generated by three medical students at the University of Manchester and covers the academic and educational aspects of medical education at the University such as course outlines, lecture notes, and examination work, but the papers also give insight into the social and non-academic side of being a student at the University of Manchester during the 20th Century.

Administrative / Biographical History

The collection spans three generations of the Hudson Watt family who attended the University of Manchester to complete their medical education-John Newton Hudson attended the University of Manchester in the 1920s, his son-in-law John Murray Watt attended the University of Manchester in the 1940s, and John Murray Watt's son John Newton Watt attended the University in the 1970/1980s. All three men went on to be general practitioners based on the training they received at the University.

Arrangement

The first subfonds contains the papers of John Murray Watt and consists of the following material:

  • JHW/1/1 University and Medical School Papers
  • JHW/1/2 Personal Papers and Ephemera

The second subfonds contains the papers of John Newton Watt and consists of the following material:

  • JHW/2/1 Medical Science BSc at St Andrews University
  • JHW/2/2 Clinical Studies at University of Manchester Medical School

The third subfonds contains the papers of John Newton Hudson and consists of the following material:

  • JHW/3/1 Medical Education at the University of Manchester

Access Information

The collection is open to any accredited reader.

The collection includes material which is subject to the Data Protection Act 2018. The University of Manchester Library (UML) holds the right to process personal data for research purposes. Acquisition Information

Given to the University of Manchester Archives in June 2016 by Helen Watt; daughter of John Murray Watt, and sister of John Newton Watt.

Photocopies and photographic copies of material in the archive can be supplied for private study purposes only, depending on the condition of the documents.

A number of items within the archive remain within copyright under the terms of the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988; it is the responsibility of users to obtain the copyright holder's permission for reproduction of copyright material for purposes other than research or private study.
