Scope and Content

This series contains large size material associated with the illustrations of Mr. Richard Leacroft.

They are typically working drawings and final version of the isometric reconstructions also known as 'cut-away' or 'cut-open' illustrations. These drawings were created in pencil or ink on tracing paper or tracing plastic. There are also a number of sketches and rough drawings. In addition, it contains architectural surveys or research material which were consulted to aid Mr. Leacroft to create his illustrations.

This series contains outsize material in outsize folders identified in file or item level.

Custodial History

A reference numbering system devised by Mrs. Helen Leacroft prior to the collection's acquisition by the V&A indicates the illustration number in the respective books in each drawing (i.e. T&P 151). T&P means Theatre and Playhouse and 151 indicates the number of the illustration. Material with illustration number are indicated in this catalogue description to file level as Fig. X (i.e. Fig.131).

When the collection was donated to the museum, the original drawings were stored in rolls and arranged in ascending order according to their illustration numbers. After the donation, as a result of a major conservation project, these drawings were re-housed in flat large folders and arranged by size instead of ascending numeral as in the original order. Material associated to an specific book or context have been kept together.
