Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
The Treweek family of Amlwch were originally from Cornwall. James Treweek became the manager of Mona Mine, Amlwch, Anglesey, in 1811, moving to Mona Lodge with his wife Jane. He was an experienced miner in Cornwall and brought Cornish men and methods with him. He held control of all aspects of mine operation until his death in 1851. His family then took control of the mine and developed the Amlwch shipbuilding industry in the middle of the 19th century; the first yard at Amlwch was established by James' son, Nicholas Treweek. James Treweek also founded the English Methodist Church in Amlwch. The family papers were assembled and compiled by Moe Treweek; an earlier account was prepared by G. Brady (no further information).
