Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
R L V Burrows: A professional photographer active on Anglesey principally in the period between the end of the Second World War and the mid 1960s.
His business was based in his shop and studio on Swift Square, Holyhead and these negatives reflect the fact that his business was centred around the town of Holyhead and its immediate hinterland. He worked as a local press photographer as well as a commissioned photographer in his own right. In this field he took many wedding and portrait images.
The collection also contains many of R L V Burrows' personal images displaying his interests and craft as a photographer.

Appraisal Information
The original accession was 7000 - 8000 glass negatives of various sizes together with a quantity of celluloid negatives. No listing accompanied the collection and although numbers are visible on many negatives it has not been possible to re-create any order out of these numbers, be this chronological, thematic or negative format.
The collection was weeded down to some 2000 negatives in the first instance and then down to the final numbers of 983 described in the catalogue below.
A certain amount of conservation work has also been carried out on the negatives, principally cleaning and re-boxing. Some negatives are also in a delicate or damaged condition. These are noted in the list.
Within the collection were perhaps over 1000 local press format marriage images. These negatives were rejected on the grounds that these images are already held within the Archives local newspaper holdings and this in named and dated format. An exception to this is WSM/418/897 which shows the site of the Old Roman Catholic Church on Market Street, Holyhead.
The negatives are presented in theme groupings and are accompanied by as comprehensive accompanying notes as have been possible. It should be noted that the listing was carried out through examining the negatives only and it is entirely possible that the examination of any image in positive or larger format might greatly expand or amend the listed contents of any negative.
