Petty Sessions began to appear at the beginning of the 18th century as extra meetings to lessen the burden on Justices of the Peace in Quarter Sessions. The Petty Sessions were regular divisional meetings and dealt with all manner of cases like the Quarter Sessions. They were in existence at least as early as 1792. As was the normal practice, Anglesey was subdivided into geographical divisions with each magistrate being assigned to one division. In 1827 there were four divisions based on Beaumaris, Llangefni, Bodedern and Llanerchymedd. These were reduced to two in 1832, the First (or Eastern) Division, consisiting of Beaumaris, Menai Bridge and Llangefni, and the Second (or Western), consisting of Holyhead, Valley, Amlwch and Llanerchymedd. The Sessions were held twice monthly in each division as opposed to the Quarter Sessions, which were held every three months. The Petty Sessions dealt mainly with minor cases such as petty theft, drunkenness, minor assaults, bastardy and failure to maintain families, larceny, trespassing, fraud and juvenile cases, as well as ale licensing and adoption. They required the presence of two Justices of the Peace but no jury.
