Julia Betty Coxall, (nee Welch, known as Betty) was born in 1922. Aged 17 (c. 1939), Julia Betty Coxall and her twin sister Ethel Joan Steiner trained as nurses in Queen Mary’s Hospital, Carshalton, then continued their training in Weymouth Hospital. After qualifying as nurses, both sisters studied midwifery at the North Middlesex Hospital. In 1946 they moved onto Lord Mayor Treloar’s Hospital Alton, before moving again to Yeovil District Hospital, where she met her future husband. Coxall took a break from nursing to raise her three children but returned to work at the Herringstone Road Annexe (A tuberculosis ward) in Dorchester. Afterwards, she worked at the Chest Hospital in Southampton.
