Scope and Content

The parish of Great Tew covers a large area lying 16 miles north-west of Oxford and 8 miles south-west of Banbury. It is bounded by the parishes of Little Tew, Swerford, South Newington, Sandford St. Martin and Enstone. Great Tew and Little Tew were held in plurality until c.1857 and then re-united in 1930.Great Tew formed part of Wootton Hundred and belonged to Chipping Norton Poor Law Union. The parish was subsequently under the local authorities Chipping Norton Rural District and its successor West Oxfordshire District.

These records include parish registers, accounts, correspondence, rate assessment records and poor law papers which have been created by successive incumbents and parish officers.

Items 4/F1/1, 5/F1/1, 2/A1/1, 5/A4/1 and 7/F1/1 were deposited by the vicar of Great Tew in 1957. The remainder of the material was deposited by the vicar and Parochial Church Council of Great Tew in 1977, except for PAR271/1/R3/4 and PAR271/2/A/2 which were deposited in 2002 as accession 4600. Re-catalogued in November 2003 by Talei Rounds.
