ORDNANCE SURVEY MAPS COLLECTION

Ordnance Survey printed maps of Flintshire, 1833-1972, including soil survey maps, geological maps and town plans, 1870-1871; copies of surveyors' drawings, 1833-5.

The Ordnance Survey developed from the Board of Ordnance which, in the late 18th century, was charged with the task of mapping the south coast of England following fears of a French invasion. During the 19th century, the original one-inch maps grew into a series covering the whole of Britain. The Ordnance Survey became a separate organization in 1841 and produced a six-inch series (1: 10,560). The county of Flintshire was originally mapped in this scale between 1871 and 1882. Between 1853-1896, a series of 25-inch (1: 2500) maps were created for the majority of the country. In the 20th century, the maps were revised periodically (2nd edition, Provisional edition, 3rd edition, 4th edition). Large-scale maps of urban areas were produced in the later 19th century, and in Flintshire these covered Holywell, Mold and Rhyl.

At least one copy of each map deposited at Flintshire Record Office has been retained, but some excess duplicates have been donated to neighbouring Record Offices.

Any Denbighshire maps not needed by Denbighshire Record Office have been disposed of.
