Collection of New Scala Theatre Photographs

This collection consists of autographed and production photographs as well as a number of programmes relating to the New Scala Theatre. Dated materials range from 1913 to 1953.

This collection of production and promotional photographs was compiled by Cecil Langman, a stage manager at the New Scala Theatre during World War II and until his retirement, c.1960.

The New Scala Theatre began life as New Rooms in Tottenham Street in 1772. Renamed The Scala Theatre in 1904, it was to be named and renamed numerous times. In 1923 it was renamed as The New Scala and became known for amateur productions and pantomime, and for a while was home to Gang Shows. During World War II it was renamed yet again, this time reverting to The Scala Theatre. In 1969 the theatre was demolished after a fire destroyed the building. The Scala House office block now stands in its place.
