Administrative / Biographical History
Henry Kenneth Alfred Russell, known as Ken Russell, was a British film director. He was born in Southampton, Hampshire, England on 3 July 1927. He began making short films in the 1950s and made several documentaries for the BBC TV arts programme Monitor from 1959-1965. His 1969 film Women in Love , an adaptation of the D.H Lawrence novel, won him an Oscar nomination for Best Director. Several of Russell's films caused controversy for their nudity and portrayal of sexuality, The Devils (1971) probably causing the greatest furore.
