Rutherglen Old Co-operative Victualling Society appears to have operated out of a single shop for the duration of its existence selling goods to their members. It is unknown when the society commenced business. For at least the period 1842 to 1849 the Purchaser and Salesman of the society was James Cross. In July 1846 the society began talking of winding up but decided to continue for a further three years due to its continuing success. It is not clear why they placed a time limit on its existence but it may have been due to the period of the lease of the building they operated from. In 1849 James Cross announced his intention to step down as Purchaser and Salesman and at this same time the society began winding up. The shop was taken over by Mr Fleming and the committee began making attempts to regain money owed to them from its members. In the last minutes of 7th November 1849 it is noted that: the committee find it impossible to raise a sufficiency of money to wind up the affairs of the society by expiration of the agreement entered into with the Merchants, without using legal measures against certain individuals which they are unwilling to do of their own accord. A committee was then elected with the aim of bringing the society's business to a conclusion.
