Administrative / Biographical History
The Eastern Telegraph Company was founded in 1872. Its chairman was John Pender and the managing director was Sir James Anderson.
By 1883 the company operated 44 stations, had 18,334 miles of cables, owned 946 land lines and leased 1,812 others. It operated transatlantic cables to North and South America, as well as cables to Europe, Africa, the Middle and Far East, and Australasia.
