Scope and Content

From John, Prior of Merton co Surrey and the convent of the same place, to John Bowland of Merton.

Term: to hold from the Feast of St Michael next following, the end of the term of John Hale, now farmer, for 31 years, or as agreed between Hale and Bowland.

Rent: £4 a year.

Conditions: repairs to be done and land kept in cultivation. John Bowland to have fyrebote, hedgebote, cartebote and ploughbote. If rent unpaid or conditions not performed, the Prior and Convent have right of re-entry.

Victoria County History iv, 114: Wandsworth, an estate known from the 16th century as The Garrett seems to be the tenement near Dunsford of which site rented at £4 in 1535 when it belonged to Merton Priory [ Valor Ecclesiasticus, ii, 48]. Left by the prior to John Bowland, not long after it was included in a grant to Robert Dudley of the manor of Dunsford [ Surrey Arch. Coll. x, 97].
