Administrative / Biographical History

Glasgow Free Church Students'Theological Society was founded in January 1859 and was formed to allow the discussion of theological questions. It was founded under the presidency of Gavin Chapman, and the first secretary was John Brownlee. Membership was open to any matriculated student of the Free Church College, Glasgow, Scotland. Any other church student may be admitted to membership by paying an entry fee. The Society consisted of honorary and ordinary members, and met on a weekly basis. It endeavoured to obtain the voluntary consent of members to read essays or take part in debate at these meetings.
