Scope and Content

Manuscript of an essay on the 'Place-names of Glamorganshire' submitted for a competition at the Swansea Eisteddfod 1891; account book containing list of financial guarantors to the National Eisteddfod at Swansea and lists of subscriptions towards prizes, 1907.

Administrative / Biographical History

These records concern Eisteddfodau held at Swansea, namely the Swansea Eisteddfod 1891 and the National Eisteddfod held at Swansea 1907. The first Eisteddfod seems to have been held in 1176 in Cardigan and consisted of competitions between bards, poets, harpers and pipers. Later, the tradition of Eisteddfodau declined until the end of the eighteenth century when they were revived as part of the revival of interest in Celtic tradition, music and culture. In the 1860s the National Eisteddfod Society was formed to organise Eisteddfodau.
