The administration of the Church of England became more complex in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and a range of boards, committees, councils and funding bodies was developed to deal with the growth in parishes, church buildings, ministry, mission, education, clergy, church property, investments and finances. The records in this section are the records of the administrative committees, boards and other bodies created in the Diocese of York from the mid nineteenth century onwards. Most of these records have come from, and continue to be deposited by, the Diocesan Office, which is the administrative centre for the diocese.
Records include the records of the Diocesan Synod and related bodies (1947-ongoing); the Diocesan Board of Finance and its committees and predecessors, dealing with property, trusts, investments, parsonages, maintenance of the ministry, church buildings, and chancel repair (1911-ongoing); the Diocesan Board of Education and its predecessor bodies (1855-ongoing); the Diocesan Ordination Candidates Council (1909-ongoing); the Diocesan Ministry and Ecumenical Council (1910-1971); the Diocesan Advisory Committee for the Care of Churches (1920-ongoing); the Diocesan Board of Patronage (1867-ongoing); the Diocesan Evangelistic Council (1918-1973), the Diocesan Pastoral Committee and its predecessors (1924-ongoing); and the Redundant Churches Uses Committee (1969-ongoing). There are also records relating to Diocesan Funds and Appeals (1914-c.1989); Diocesan Commissions (1936-1977); the York Diocesan Association for Moral Welfare and associated organisations (1906-1995); and Diocesan published material (1863-ongoing).

Scope and Content
Arrangement
This is part of the new arrangement of the York Diocesan Archive which is currently being prepared.
The new arrangement draws on the earlier arrangements of 1973 and 2003-2005 but will also incorporate some reorganisation, based on a comprehensive survey and inventory of the archive, and much new cataloguing.

Until the new arrangement of the York Diocesan Archive is complete, the online finding aids to series level on the Archives Hub,http://archiveshub.ac.uk/ should be consulted. These reflect the 1973 arrangement as modified in 2003-2005.
