Scope and Content

'Van Dyck: A Complete Catalogue of the Paintings' is the modern, definitive catalogue raisonne of Anthony Van Dyck published in 2004 by Yale University Press and the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art. A collaboration between four esteemed experts in aspects of Van Dyck's work, Oliver Millar contributed the chapter 'Van Dyck in England'.

The files in this series document the scope and evolution of the volume over ten years from concept to publication.

Seventeen files contain background research on specific themes (ONM/6/1).

One file contains a handwritten draft for the introductory text to Millar's chapter on 'Van Dyck in England' (ONM/6/3).

There are nine files of research notes on specific paintings and handwritten drafts for Millar's catalogue entries for the 'Van Dyck in England' section (ONM/6/4). There is also a file of draft catalogue entries for the section 'Van Dyck's First Visit to London' (ONM/6/2).

The administation section (ONM/6/5) contains a file of draft entries and notes for the preface and chronology; and two files of correspondence with owners and institutions who helped Millar with his research and attributions.

The archive of Horst Vey (1930-2010) is held at the Rubenianum, Antwerp. It includes papers relating to this publication and correspondence with Oliver Millar (reference BE-ANN14/003VEY).
