Administrative / Biographical History

The Committee was established with the Department of Industrial Administration in 1918. Its membership included local business figures and it advised on appointments of staff and special lecturers, and helped solicit funding from local businesses to support the Department. The Committee made recommendations on such matters to the College's Consultative Sectional Committee on Industrial Administration. The Committee was chaired from 1918-1921 by the industrialist (Sir) Samuel Turner (1878-1955) of Turner & Newall, and from 1921-1926 by Charles Renold (1883-1967) of Renold Chains and Gears; both of whom also financially supported the Department. After 1926, the Committee appears to have reported directly to the College's main governing body, the College of Technology Sub-Committee. In 1943 the Advisory Board was reconstituted as the Sectional Committee for Industrial Administration. This remained in existence until 1956.
