Scope and Content

Charlbury British School opened in 1815 facing Browns Lane off Sheep Street. In 1863 an Infants department was added to the school (please see S58/2 for records of this school.). In 1888 the British School was taken over by the School Board because of the need to expand. The school was enlarged in 1906 and expanded again in 1928, when schools in neighbouring villages were closed. In 1958 The Spendlove County Secondary Modern School was built and the old school became Charlbury County Primary School. In 1987 the old school was closed and all children moved to the 'new' site on Crawborough Road. Please see CC4/42 for other records of this school.

The records were deposited as part of Acc 3140 in September 1990, Acc 3937 in February 1995, Acc 4453 in February 1999 and as part of Acc 6408 in November 2015, and also transferred from the Oxfordshire Education Department to the Oxfordshire History Centre. Recatalogued by Alison Smith in November 2013 with additions by Sophie-Elise Anker in July 2015 and August 2017.
