Scope and Content

The brewery owned by Sir John Treacher was, as explained above, the nucleus of William Hall's brewery, when Hall bought it in 1795.

Treacher acquired or leased several properties in the city of Oxford (most notably a malthouse on the site of the Paradise Garden in St. Ebbes), but it seems that the centre of his operations was the Swan's Nest Brewery in St. Thomas. Vol. II of the Victoria County History of Oxfordshire, p.263, says that Sir John was leasing this from Oxford City by 1780, and that 'from the original deeds still in the possession of Hall's brewery [a brewery here] was in existence in 1718'. Unfortunately, no deeds specifically on the Swan's Nest or Swan Brewery (as it was later called) are preserved in this collection.
