Samuel Powell, builder, was requested to build a school, a master's house and playground at Rhydgaled in December 1876. It was to be completed by end of December 1877 at a cost of £810. The architect was RCB Clough of Denbigh. An advertisement for a master for the new board school at Rhydgaled was posted on 5th January 1878 for 50 scholars at a salary of £40 per annum. (With house, garden and government grant. Welsh language speaker preferred).
The school was formally opened by the school board of Henllan on 2nd August 1878. It was a mixed junior and infants school.
A damning inspector's report was received on 24th October 1919 (ED/LB/15/3 page 60) criticising the ability of the head teacher 'the work is exceedingly backward and shows no redeeming features. The Head teacher has completely failed to keep abreast of the latest developments in teaching'. In May 1922 Mr Hayes Jones retired after 21 years in post. In April 1923 David Wynne became the new head teacher and a better report followed in 1924. In 1928 there were 41 pupils on roll. In January 1938 John William Hand was appointed head teacher.
The school closed in July 2014 after 136 years as a Welsh Medium Primary school. The last Head teacher was Sian Thomas Gelling and there were just 19 pupils on roll.
