In 1830, at the age of 21, Mr. Robert Hutchison opened an account in the name of Robert Hutchison and Company and began trading in wheat, barley oats, flax, butter and flour. Over time he became more and more involved in the grain aspect of the business and by 1845 the company had achieved great prosperity. He began to expand further afield and by 1856 the company owned all the land in East Kirkcaldy on which the present flour mill now stands. The company now operates as Carr's Flour Hutchisons.
