Administrative / Biographical History
The German South Polar expedition, 1901-1903 (leader Erich von Drygalski) was one of several expeditions to eventuate from the International Geographical Congress of 1895. Funded by the German government Gauss sailed south in 1901 visiting several islands including Heard Island and Iles Crozet. When Gauss became stuck in the pack ice of the Weddell Sea the expedition were forced to over winter.
Vanhffen was a member of the scientific staff.
