Administrative / Biographical History

The Trust was created by the Glasgow Improvements Act 1866 (34 & 35 Vict., c.85), and was the main predecessor of the Housing Department. The Lord Provost, magistrates and town council were appointed trustees with compulsory powers to acquire houses and land within defined areas of the city centre, to demolish the existing slum housing, form new streets and build new housing for rent. The powers of the trustees were transferred to the Corporation itself in 1895 (Glasgow Corporation and Police Act 1895, 58 & 59 Vict., c.143).
