Administrative / Biographical History

William Penny (1809-1892) made his first whaling voyage aged twelve. In the ensuing years he led several expeditions to the whaling grounds of the Arctic and in 1850 was placed in command of the British Franklin Search Expedition sent to search Jones Sound and Wellington Channel for signs of the missing British Naval Northwest Passage Expedition, 1845-1848 (leader Sir John Franklin).
