Administrative / Biographical History
The Norwegian Antarctic Expedition, 1910-1912 (leader Roald Amundsen) was originally conceived as an expedition to the North Pole. Objectives were switched and the Fram sailed south. From their base on in the Bay of Whales, Amundsen, Olav Olavsen Bjaaland, Helmer Julius Hanssen, Sverre Helge Hassel and Oscar Wisting became the first men to reach the South Pole on 14 December 1911.
