Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
The Tamnavulin Distillery in Tomnavoulin, Banffshire was built by Invergordon Distillers Ltd in 1965-1966, with the subsidiary Tamnavulin-Glenlivet Distillery Company Ltd (company number: SC044980) founded in 1967. It was built during the 1960s Scotch whisky boom, with six stills and for a period had Saladin maltings. Tamnavulin is the Gaelic for 'mill on the hill' and is in part reference to the former wool carding mill situated within the distillery site. Up until the 1990s there was a visitor centre for the distillery within the old wool mill.
In 1993 the Invergordon Distillers Group Ltd along with its distilleries was acquired by the Whyte & Mackay Group plc. Tamnavulin was mothballed in 1995, during a downturn in in the whisky market. It was re-instated for a short run of production in 2000 then mothballed again the same year. In 2007, after Whyte & Mackay was bought by United Spirits, it re-opened following a major refurbishment. The distillery continues to operate under Whyte & Mackay, whose parent company since 2014 is Emperador Distillers Inc. Tamnavulin produces whisky for blending as well as a range single malts.
