Papers of Tom Burns, Professor of Sociology at Edinburgh University 1965-1981. Prior to this appointment he held the post of Research Lecturer in the university's Department of Social Study, working with Erving Goffman.
His papers are arranged into the following series:
Research: Tom Burns undertook several large scale research studies during his time at Edinburgh. This series includes papers relating to his research into the management of industrial and manufacturing firms much of which contributed to his first book "The Management of Innovation" (co-authored with G M Stalker and published in 1961), his research into the internal organisation of both British Petroleum and the NHS and a number of smaller research projects such as housing in in Pilton, North Edinburgh.
Papers and Publications: Drafts and published copies of his many papers and journal articles, including a draft of his unpublished work Organisation and Social Order on which he worked for 20 years.
Teaching Material: Course outlines and lecture notes relating to his teaching role in the Sociology Department of Edinburgh University.
