Records of Newman Barton, pawnbroker of Thorne

Records of articles pawned, 1912-1947; memo pad containing details of payments made by Newton Barton, 1923; and receipt book, 1947-1949.

Newman Barton was born in 1864 in Staincross, Yorkshire, the son of Andrew Barton, a stone mason, and his wife Sarah Ann. By 1881 he was working as a pawnbroker’s apprentice, He married Sarah Jane Ellis in 1888 and the couple settled in Mexborough where Newman worked for some years as a clothier and boot dealer.
Some time between 1897 and 1901 he moved to Doncaster and established himself in his previous trade of pawnbroker. The 1901 census records him and his wife and children living in Oxford Place, where they remained until at least 1939. By 1911 two of Newman’s sons, Andrew and George, had joined the family business as pawnbroker’s assistants.
By 1922 Newman’s business spanned several properties. The Kelly’s Directory of that year lists three shops, at 14, 16 and 18 Finkle Street, Thorne, at 123 St Sepulchre-gate, Doncaster, and at 54 Doncaster Road, Barnsley.
Newman Barton retired prior to 1939 and died at Thorne in 1946.
